On February 17th, the Sala Delibes at the Teatro Calderón in Valladolid, Spain, witnessed a remarkable performance of the musical piece “Una fiesta de despedida” (A Farewell Party). Serving as the culmination of the Stage of Mind project, “Una fiesta de despedida” is a powerful testament to resilience, as its participants bid a temporary farewell to the pressures, invalidation, and exhaustion that comes with being dissenters from an unheard norm.
In this musical production, the performers not only take the stage but also transform the entire theatrical space into a party they become a part of. Adorned in their finest attire, they share their stories—the stark statistics of vacant houses juxtaposed with the thousands of homeless individuals, moments that necessitate pause and the solace of weeping in solitude, times when wings are clipped, and anger transforming into sadness. Happiness becomes contingent on opportunities and encounters with certain individuals, while an imposing wall restricts their choices and aspirations.
As the wall remains, the performers seek solace in their refuges. They indulge in the Harry Potter saga or the latest football match, gaze at the sea from the shoreline, lose themselves in music in their rooms or on stage, and orchestrate a farewell party adorned with chocolate, churros, shimmering lights, golden hues, and their ideal playlist. Amidst these shared experiences, a crucial aspect of the production lies in who tells the stories and from what perspective. The participants’ testimonies have inspired the narrative, meticulously woven by playwright Víctor Villazán, who approached the task with exceptional sensitivity. Their experiences have also shaped the lyrics of the music performed and composed by Nacho Prada, serving as the thread that connects all the scenes and infusing the actors and actresses with poetic intentions.
